What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of medicine – it has been used in China for over 3000 years. It involves inserting a needle(s) into the body to aid disease prevention, therapy or maintenance of health.

How does acupuncture work? Traditional Chinese acupuncture incorporates theories of “energy (Qi) flow” and attempts to improve or maintain this flow. Research shows that the brain stimulation which occurs with acupuncture can aid the release of the body’s natural pain relieving chemicals (endorphins). What we do know is that the effects of acupuncture are cumulative and whether we believe in the traditional Chinese theories or not, research shows that pain relief is real.

What happens during a treatment?Patients will be examined, a diagnosis given and a specific treatment plan developed. After discussion with the patient, informed consent is collected before treatment commences.
